Big Five Foods Groups

News

Eat a bit of everything, not a lot of anything

The Max Rubner-Institut’s appearance at this year’s Berlin International Green Week is a plea for nutrition rich in variety. „Is there anything left I can eat?“ is a frequently asked question by anxious consumers and answered by the Federal Research Institute of Nutrition and Food with a hearty “Something of everything, nothing too much”.

You can undoubtedly exclude some food groups from your diet if you offset potential nutrient deficiencies otherwise – you can, but you don’t have to. A balanced and varied diet, which in total is adequate to one’s energy demand and based on fruits and vegetables, meats and fish, milk and dairy products, oils and fats as well as potatoes and cereals or the like, is healthy and tasty. There are good reasons to eat products out of each of the „Big Five” food groups and not to exclude any of them. Anyone who additionally consumes a lot of vegetables and not too much meat, is on the right track for a healthy nutrition.

These are the topics the Max Rubner-Institut focuses on at this year’s Green Week 2016. Visitors of the exhibition hall of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture will be informed about various components and ingredients of food.

In order to relate to all this theory in practice, a sandwich with ingredients from the above mentioned food groups will be prepared for visitors. While they are being informed by scientists, the sandwich will be created step by step, parallel to the narration. An aromatic, grilled wholemeal bread drizzled with high quality olive oil is prepared with either a bite of herring, cured ham or Alpine cheese and topped with slices of cucumber, fig chutney or plum jam and a walnut.

At the end visitors get this sandwich together with the summarised information to invigorate them while they continue visiting the Green Week.
